PSHE at Firfield

Intent:

At Firfield Primary School, we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.

We aim to achieve this primarily through explicit teaching in weekly PSHE lessons. We follow a whole school mindful approach using the Jigsaw scheme of learning. The intent of this scheme is to enable pupils to:

  • Have a sense of purpose
  • Value self and others
  • Form relationships
  • Make and act on informed decisions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Work with others
  • Respond to challenge
  • Be an active partner in their own learning
  • Be active citizens within the local community
  • Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
  • Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

Furthermore, we encourage pupils to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They learn to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

They learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Our Relationships and Sex Education, which is also taken from the Jigsaw scheme, enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Implementation:

At Firfield Primary School we use the Jigsaw scheme of learning to teach PSHE. This is a mindful approach to teaching PSHE, which underpins our strong Mental Health and Wellbeing ethos. Jigsaw is a spiral curriculum; this ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year, and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

Children develop their knowledge throughout their time with us in six key areas of learning:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Strong leadership and monitoring within the subject ensures that all staff are fully equipped to teach all aspects of the PSHE curriculum to a high standard. The nurturing of pupil voice allows children to become involved in their learning within PSHE lessons and allows teachers to respond to, and adapt their teaching to pupil need when and where appropriate.

Impact:

Through a well taught, balanced PSHE curriculum that allows all learners to flourish, children will leave Firfield Primary School with the personal qualities necessary to live happy and successful lives that are both fulfilling and rewarding.

Below you will find an example letter that is sent out to parents in May to share what the children will be covering in the summer term.  We invite parents to consult and ask any questions you have around our RSE curriculum.  You will also find a copy of the results from our most resent consultation (survey).
