Art and DT

Art and DT at Firfield

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination.  Our aim at Firfield is to develop the cross-curricular use of art and design in all subjects enabling children to record from first-hand experience and from imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work.  We want to develop creativity and imagination through a range of activities in order to improve the children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques and to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts, and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

In the Early Years, the children have access to a variety of creative challenges both through the continuous provision and adult guided sessions.  The children are encouraged to explore and experiment with a variety of media and materials, putting into practise skills they have learnt and using their imagination.  As the children move up through KS1 and KS2, they continue to develop these skills, studying the art work of a variety of artists, craftsmen and architects, showcasing lots of different styles. The use of sketchbooks starts at the end of the reception year and continues through KS1 and KS2 as a place to record observations and review and revisit ideas.

Through the new 2014 curriculum, a large emphasis is placed on children being a designer.  Children are given the opportunity to design and make all sorts of wonderful creations using many different resources and developing a variety of skills.  The children also learn about healthy food and healthy cooking through Food Technology teaching.  The children prepare and make a range of both hot food and cold food, and enjoy eating their creations at the end!

We are very keen to acknowledge and celebrate all of the arts that our children at Firfield take part in.  In 2016 Arts Council England awarded Firfield Artsmark Silver in recognition of our commitment to creative arts in their many forms.  The children look forward to our bi-annual art week, our annual DT day and craft afternoons, to which parents and carers are invited.
