Art at Firfield
Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. Our aim at Firfield is to develop the cross-curricular use of art and design in all subjects enabling children to record from first-hand experience and from imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work. We want to develop creativity and imagination through a range of activities in order to improve the children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques and to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts, and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.
In the Early Years, the children have access to a variety of creative challenges both through the continuous provision and adult guided sessions. The children are encouraged to explore and experiment with a variety of media and materials, putting into practise skills they have learnt and using their imagination. As the children move up through KS1 and KS2, they continue to develop these skills, studying the art work of a variety of artists, craftsmen and architects, showcasing lots of different styles. The use of sketchbooks starts at the end of the reception year and continues through KS1 and KS2 as a place to record observations and review and revisit ideas.
