Birch & Elm Class

Welcome to Year 4

Mr Lawson and Mrs Saville/Mrs Shepherd are the class teachers in Year 4.

It is vitally important that children are still reading regularly at home (every night if possible).  If you are able to ask questions and look up words the children don’t understand, this will help them to build up their confidence and vocabulary. This year we are having a real focus on reading at home and children will be rewarded by how often this happens.

In Year 4, we have our first school residential to Castleton in Derbyshire just before Easter.  This is linked to our Romans topic ‘Why were the Romans powerful?’ where we create working models of Roman catapults. We also perform our annual play about the Romans at this point in the school year.

We are lucky enough to have the music partnership to come into school and give us a chance to take part in clarinet lessons over a 15 week period.  At the end of this, we put on a performance for parents to showcase everything we have learned.

Our first history topic is ‘Why were the Mayans mighty?’ During this topic, we have a special visit from Partake where we have a hands-on approach to our learning, making glyphs, masks, taste hot chocolate, handle artefacts and play the traditional game of Pok-a-tok.

Our other topics include: ‘Are you a bright spark?’ (Science topic about electricity); ‘What happens to your food when you eat it?’ (Science topic about the digestive system) and our geography topics are ‘What is it like in Whitby?’  and ‘Where is the land of ice and fire?’
