On 9th October, 10 talented, female footballers took part in their very first school tournament. In the run-up, girls had been hand-selected based on their footballing prowess as displayed in Mrs. Smith’s Monday after-school club. The strongest, most determined, skilful players were chosen.
Finding ourselves in a group alongside Sawley, Dallimore and Ashbrook, we knew we had our work cut out for us. Our first match saw us up against Ashbrook Juniors. With a solid goalkeeping performance and great team goals scored eventually by Isla L and Honor W respectively, we found ourselves off to a great start.
In our next match, against stronger opposition in the form of Sawley Juniors, Millie S was passed in the top right corner with a 20 yard kick to leave us 0-1 down. However, with spectacular performances from Jasmine S, Melody M and Freyja C, we managed to claw it back and earn a 1-1 draw.
Going in to our final match of the group stages, we knew we had to win to secure qualification… and win we did! Wonderful, strong performances from Ruby I, Belle P and Olivia M saw us win 1-0 with another goal from Honor W and great determination from Emma B in defence to avoid conceding any goals.
This meant we had qualified for the final- playing against the winners of Group B- Shardlow. With just 8 minutes, there was tension in the air as parents spectating waited with baited breath for the first goal.
With around 2 minutes remaining, Belle P decided to make a storming run. She went through mid-field, piercing their defence and slotting the ball in the bottom corner to take Firfield 1-0 up. This ended as the final score with safe hands from Millie throughout and a victory for the first ever official Firfield Girls’ Football Team.
